A HEART FOR SERVICE

"The first and most important step toward success is the feeling within us that we can succeed."

For as long as I can remember,  “Big” was there to shoulder the responsibilities of the church. He was the cornerstone of the business actions of Second Shiloh Baptist Church Family and the community of Bronwood, Georgia. You would think that one man with so much responsibility would be hard to reach and difficult to communicate with was not a sharer of life, yet he was.  He was the one who would step forward and accept any task; even if he had to put forth more time and effort than the next person.  He made himself accessible to everyone. In the areas of business and music, he played piano for several church choirs, taught music, and helped to organize much more. He was a good friend. At an early age he saw something special in me in my walk with the Lord. He began teaching me the business of the Church and I quickly latched on to him for that knowledge. What a mighty blessing that was.  At that time, I did not see the purpose behind his plan for me.  He became my Father and mentor in the realms of the Church. He had a strong will and a gentle spirit. When storms came into my life, his words of kindness calmed me.  He told me that crying was ok because it washes pain away.  I asked him once if it was proper for a female to do hymns in the Church.  His reply was, “ sure- you can do one”.   He taught me hymns and shared that hymns were songs for the soul.  With this in mine, I chose the hymn “A charge to keep I have” and learned it.  “Big” told me ”never be satisfied with things as they are; always work hard to try to make them better and God will bless you for it”. These words stayed with me and now I dedicate my life to making things better. I never settle for just ok but do all I can with the best I can. Because of this, I have prospered so much.  My dedication has rewarded me with God’s grace and blessed me with His favor. He knew I would appreciate this knowledge in my future.  I decided to tell him how much he meant to me. This I will always remember and will never forget. His teachings were the foundations for the rest of my life.  He introduced me to Robert Gardner, who was a Deacon at that time, and shared with me that he would help me along the way. When his sight began to fail, I counted on Deacon Gardner even more. He has taught me so much, also.  “Big” said to always remember that Jesus makes the difference-He will always be the same and He will see about you, even when you don’t see about yourself.

My life has been made so rich by your wisdom and Jesus had been made solid by your love and appreciation for me through the years. You have been my bridge builder when the road gets rough. You gave me the courage to press forward and meet the washed out areas of my life, as well as the courage to mend and repair them with small things that were good for my heart. The end result is a Godly Woman as dedicated as Ruth and as bold as Deborah, willing to stand boldly for Christ who has been and still is the center of my joy.

Dedicated to Deacon Henry Wilbon: my mentor, my teacher, my friend.

In Memory of My Father

The mountains were getting higher
The hills were getting harder
His eyes were getting dimmer
His steps were getting shorter
But his heart kept getting bigger and bigger
He lived a life that was a wonder to some
For he seemed to struggle day by day
Even during his struggles, he would always give his all
To anyone that asked, for he was always
Concerned about those that were around him
He was a man of trust, he was a man of knowledge
Although he never received a degree in learning
He held a master's degree in wisdom
And a doctorate degree in faith
Much like the talent of his music
He was never taught a musical note
But his music was like that of Beethoven's
Although my father is gone now, his memories linger on
I know he is resting, somewhere around God's Throne!

“THE SPIRITUAL STAR GOSPEL SINGERS”
of Bronwood, Georgia

The Spiritual Star Gospel Singers were a group of young men who were members of Second Shiloh Baptist Church.  The group consisted of: Deacon Bennie Mitchell, Deacon M. C. Kendrick, Bro. Sammie J. Kendrick, Bro. Elmore Harvey, Deacon R. C. English and Bro. Otis H. Wilbon.

It is believed that the group was founded by Deacon Bennie Mitchell.  Deacon Mitchell was known to have a love for music because later years, he formed a couple of other singing groups.  One of those groups introduced a family very well known today to our church family and the community for their singing talents, “The Bogan Family”.

Deacon Mitchell and the “Spiritual Star Gospel Singers” took on immediate popularity!  They traveled throughout the surrounding communities singing praises to God.  They purchased uniforms and took on the look of any “famous recording artists”!  Although the group had a musician, Deacon M. C. Kendrick, who was the brother of Deacon Willie C. Mitchell, sang a lot of their songs without music.  Deacon Mitchell sang bass and where we now listen to bass guitars in music, he performed the bass sound verbally!  Oh, he could sing that bass part to perfection!  Deacon Kendrick played the lead guitar, but his brother, Deacon Mitchell, brought out the bass in his voice.

Even though the group never did a professional recording, they recorded many memories in the hearts and souls of members of Second Shiloh and the surrounding communities.  The group was very talented and possessed finesse’ in their singing- even back then!

The group sang for many years until the untimely death of Deacon M. C. Kendrick in a fatal auto crash.  After his passing, several members moved away and the group stopped singing.  However, the ones that remained started singing in the church choir and brought that same “melodious” sound to our church choir.

DEDICATION PAGE IN MEMORY OF
DEACON R. C. ENGLISH

Deacon Robert C. English, commonly referred to by some as “The Grand Dragon”, moved to this area (it is believed) in the mid 40’s.  He joined the Second Shiloh Baptist Church after becoming friends with a group of young men of Second Shiloh.  These men, along with Deacon English, later form a singing quartet group by the name of “The Spiritual Star Gospel Singers”.

Not very much is known about his life before moving here and uniting membership with Second Shiloh.  We do know that he was married to Maxine English and fathered several children.  He also ran a nightspot in Dawson, Georgia known by many as “Happyland”.  He was a talented singer and sang in the senior choir after joining Second Shiloh.  What is remembered most about Deacon English is that he was very “crafty” with his hands.  He was a carpenter by trade.

When Deacon English came to Second Shiloh, the building needed many repairs, inside and out.  He began to work on the church building little by little until finally the entire church was transformed.  He completely redecorated the interior part of the church and provided maintenance and repair work to the outside of the church.   After a while, the church took on an entire new look.  He replaced windows, added asbestos siding to the outside of the church, painted, and added different styles of décor to the inside.  He also added a choir stand in back of the pulpit, put in a new floor, and did repair work to the church bell tower.

Deacon English continued the upkeep our church until his passing.  All the work he performed remained evident until the church relocated to the city of Bronwood in 1981.

Sis. Addie Kendrick

Sis. Addie Kendrick was born May 31, 1900 in Worth County, Georgia to the late Mr. and Mrs. Jim Milner.   She joined The Second Shiloh Baptist Church and faithfully served on The Mission Board, The Program Committee, and The Ushers’ Board.  She was President of The Senior Mission, Vice President of The Senior Choir and a Sunday School Teacher for many years.   Sis. Addie Kendrick was the grandmother of Addie Ruth Ware Harvey, Jimmy Ware, Clarence Ware and the late Charlie Ware, George Ware & Tom Kendrick of Bronwood, GA; Elizabeth Wise Maragh of Hartford, CT, and Mary Ware Brooks & James Ware of Jacksonville, FL.

DEACON JOHN “Thomas” (Big Tom) KENDRICK

Deacon John Kendrick, commonly referred to by many as “Big Tom”, was the son of Sis. Delores McDowell and Bro. Howard McDowell.   Tom grew up in and around the Shiloh community.  He attended school at the Shiloh Elementary School where played on the softball team.  He was a good batter…. he would hit home runs and most times ask someone to run for him.  I guess in these days you would call that person, “a pinch runner”.

Tom also had a love for music.  He sang in the Second Shiloh # Choir and was a member of the gospel singing group, The Bells of Harmony.  His favorite professional singing group was the Pilgrim Jubilees of the Windy City, Chicago, Illinois. Often times he would talk about this group with another member of his “Bells of Harmony” group, Bro Jimmy Lee Tell.  However, it is believed that “The Mighty Clouds of Joy” was Jimmy Lee’s favorite group.  They would talk back and forward about these famous gospel-recording groups.  Nevertheless, Tom would not back down.  He always would say that The Pilgrim Jubilees were the best group.

Big Tom also served as an usher at SSBC during the time Sis. Anna Wiseman was president.  Everyone remembers that Sis. Wiseman ran a “tight ship” on her ushers’ board.  Everyone was in his or her place, in his or her uniform and she did not mind asking you to remove your gum from your mouth before you went to your post.   Years later, Tom was ordained as a deacon.  He served as a deacon until his untimely passing.

Tom was a truck driver by trade.  He drove truck for Oxford Construction Company for a number of years.  His last employer was his cousin, Johnny Owen.  Johnny Owen was known to many as “Red Hand”.  Tom drove truck for Red until his passing.

Agnes Harvey

Your Children Mary Lue, Annie Bell, Aileen, Ulysses, Ernest, and Douglas Harvey.

Sis. Agnes Harvey was a devoted member of Second Shiloh Baptist Church.  She served on the Usher’s Board for a very long time.  She was a faithful member as well as usher of the church.  She also worked on the kitchen committee and she served as a delegate to the Union meeting and Associations.  Sis. Harvey also attended the Usher’s Union and represented her church well on those occasions.

She was a dedicated member of Second Shiloh in many ways.   She did not drive but she was in attendance at church so often as if she did drive.   She was very faithful to her church.

A Tribute to
Mrs. Lula Maude Gease
July 7, 1919    -   October 28, 2008

Mrs. Lula Maude Gease was the daughter of the late Mr. Ulysses Gardner Sr. and the late Sis. Nettie Bell Gardner.  She had 5 siblings, all brothers.    Married to the late Rev. J. S. Gease, she was the mother of one son, who preceded her in death.

She was a faithful member of Second Shiloh, serving diligently as an usher.  She was a great Sunday School Scholar, sang in the senior choir and served as a delegate to the conventions and associations on a regular basis.

Sister Lula Maude was truly a “good neighbor”.  Any time she heard of someone being sick in the community, she would walk to their house and assist with the sick in any capacity she could…be it bathing the sick person, cooking a meal for the family cleaning the house, running errands, etc.  She would be there on a daily basis doing whatever she could to make someone’s day brighter.

One of her favorite phrases was “one thing about it”…now we can say that “one thing about her” is she will be missed in Second Shiloh and the Bronwood community.
