A HEART FOR SERVICE
"The first and most important step toward success is the feeling within us that we can succeed."
For as long as I can remember, “Big” was there to shoulder the responsibilities of the church. He was the cornerstone of the business actions of Second Shiloh Baptist Church Family and the community of Bronwood, Georgia. You would think that one man with so much responsibility would be hard to reach and difficult to communicate with was not a sharer of life, yet he was. He was the one who would step forward and accept any task; even if he had to put forth more time and effort than the next person. He made himself accessible to everyone. In the areas of business and music, he played piano for several church choirs, taught music, and helped to organize much more. He was a good friend. At an early age he saw something special in me in my walk with the Lord. He began teaching me the business of the Church and I quickly latched on to him for that knowledge. What a mighty blessing that was. At that time, I did not see the purpose behind his plan for me. He became my Father and mentor in the realms of the Church. He had a strong will and a gentle spirit. When storms came into my life, his words of kindness calmed me. He told me that crying was ok because it washes pain away. I asked him once if it was proper for a female to do hymns in the Church. His reply was, “ sure- you can do one”. He taught me hymns and shared that hymns were songs for the soul. With this in mine, I chose the hymn “A charge to keep I have” and learned it. “Big” told me ”never be satisfied with things as they are; always work hard to try to make them better and God will bless you for it”. These words stayed with me and now I dedicate my life to making things better. I never settle for just ok but do all I can with the best I can. Because of this, I have prospered so much. My dedication has rewarded me with God’s grace and blessed me with His favor. He knew I would appreciate this knowledge in my future. I decided to tell him how much he meant to me. This I will always remember and will never forget. His teachings were the foundations for the rest of my life. He introduced me to Robert Gardner, who was a Deacon at that time, and shared with me that he would help me along the way. When his sight began to fail, I counted on Deacon Gardner even more. He has taught me so much, also. “Big” said to always remember that Jesus makes the difference-He will always be the same and He will see about you, even when you don’t see about yourself.
My life has been made so rich by your wisdom and Jesus had been made solid by your love and appreciation for me through the years. You have been my bridge builder when the road gets rough. You gave me the courage to press forward and meet the washed out areas of my life, as well as the courage to mend and repair them with small things that were good for my heart. The end result is a Godly Woman as dedicated as Ruth and as bold as Deborah, willing to stand boldly for Christ who has been and still is the center of my joy.
Dedicated to Deacon Henry Wilbon: my mentor, my teacher, my friend.

In Memory of My Father
The mountains were getting higher
The hills were getting harder
His eyes were getting dimmer
His steps were getting shorter
But his heart kept getting bigger and bigger
He lived a life that was a wonder to some
For he seemed to struggle day by day
Even during his struggles, he would always give his all
To anyone that asked, for he was always
Concerned about those that were around him
He was a man of trust, he was a man of knowledge
Although he never received a degree in learning
He held a master's degree in wisdom
And a doctorate degree in faith
Much like the talent of his music
He was never taught a musical note
But his music was like that of Beethoven's
Although my father is gone now, his memories linger on
I know he is resting, somewhere around God's Throne!Mary E. Coleman

DEDICATION PAGE IN MEMORY OF
DEACON R. C. ENGLISH
Deacon Robert C. English, commonly referred to by some as “The Grand Dragon”, moved to this area (it is believed) in the mid 40’s. He joined the Second Shiloh Baptist Church after becoming friends with a group of young men of Second Shiloh. These men, along with Deacon English, later form a singing quartet group by the name of “The Spiritual Star Gospel Singers”.
Not very much is known about his life before moving here and uniting membership with Second Shiloh. We do know that he was married to Maxine English and fathered several children. He also ran a nightspot in Dawson, Georgia known by many as “Happyland”. He was a talented singer and sang in the senior choir after joining Second Shiloh. What is remembered most about Deacon English is that he was very “crafty” with his hands. He was a carpenter by trade.
When Deacon English came to Second Shiloh, the building needed many repairs, inside and out. He began to work on the church building little by little until finally the entire church was transformed. He completely redecorated the interior part of the church and provided maintenance and repair work to the outside of the church. After a while, the church took on an entire new look. He replaced windows, added asbestos siding to the outside of the church, painted, and added different styles of décor to the inside. He also added a choir stand in back of the pulpit, put in a new floor, and did repair work to the church bell tower.
Deacon English continued the upkeep our church until his passing. All the work he performed remained evident until the church relocated to the city of Bronwood in 1981.
