HISTORY OF
THE SECOND SHILOH BAPTIST CHURCH
CHOIR
Our choir was organized in September 1967 under the leadership of Mary Emma Wilbon Coleman-Harris and Dea. Henry Wilbon. From the time of its existence, our choir has always had members from other churches and groups to sing with us. In the past, the choir consisted of members from the Gospelettes of Dawson, the Gospel Informers of Bronwood and a number of other churches as well. Our choir today still consists of members from other churches, namely, Shiloh Baptist Church, and Raines Baptist Church both of Dawson, Georgia.
Our past musicians include Dea. Henry Wilbon (1 yr.), Rose Maria Davis Youngblood (4 yrs.), Willie D. Latimore (4 yrs.), and Ronald Dismuke (5 yrs.). Under Ronnie, we combined with the New Hope Church Choir of Smithville. Ronnie lived in Atlanta, but he traveled near and far with this choir! We participated in a workshop at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL and performed in concerts as far as Louisville, KY. Under the direction of Willie D., this choir made a television appearance on WRBL TV's, "A Song In My Heart" in Columbus, GA. Other past musicians include Ms. Shirley Armstrong who played for us 23 years. Shirley was assisted by Mr. Chevalier (Tom) Coleman who served as our organist. Tom played organ for the choir about 8 years until he moved to Boston, Mass to attend college there. Then, Mr. Tobyias Williams, along with our first percussionist, Andre Williams, played for the choir for one year. Next we had Mr. Marcus Bentley on keyboard and Master Chevalier “CJ” Coleman, Jr. on drums. Marcus remained with us for two years until he went to Virginia. Our current keyboardist is Mr. Xavier Jones.
This choir, like any other, has seen some difficult times during these 40 years. The year 2007 was not any different. As a result of the difficulty, the choir decided to change the way it celebrated anniversaries. The celebration now takes place during regular worship services on the fourth Sundays in September. We ask that you keep the choir in your prayers as we make this transition. As always, we would like to thank Mr. Chevalier (Tom) Coleman, Sr for serving as keyboardist/director. Tom helps the choir and our musicians with hard and difficult songs from time to time. Tom grew up in his choir and he still visits and plays on Special occasions and when his schedule will allow him to. He serves as full time Minister of Music at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, in Albany, GA.
Our present vocal members include:
Armstrong, Brittney Carr, Waverly Bogans, JoAnn Cladd, Precious Bogan, Lonnie (Tam) Coleman-Harris, Mary E. Bogans, Willie Coleman, Nicole Bishop, Brenda Edwards, Julia Bishop, Katie Lunsford, Belinda Bogan- Slaton, Jennie Nelson, Mattie
